I bought this for my parents as they don't rent blu-ray and just need DVD and CD playing.

I'd say you CANNOT get a better DVD player to upscale to 1080P as good as this one. This DVD has been rated as good as Oppo higher end DVDs costing $300. The XDE processing is great and makes DVDs closer to Blu-ray and this is SPECIALLY important if your TV doesn't have great scaler on its own (lower end TVs).

The only issue I can find this this unit is that the chasis is CHEAPLY MADE and flimsy... which is fine for the price I guess.

So, overall if you need to get a budget DVD player and upscale your old DVDs or rentals to 1080P, this does the job as well as any if not the best out there!

PS. I also played DivX and AVI videos on it perfectly through USB which was great welcome.

First and foremost, this Toshiba XDE600 region free player played my DVD European region 2 PAL DVDs and standard US region 1 dvds out of the box. The setup was very simple with the free hdmi cable included in the box. The XDE feature on this player enhanced the picture even better compared to my Sony dvd player. I also connected my home theater system using the optical audio output connection and sounds perfect. Awesome player at this price!

I owned the previous 500 model of which I loved the picture enhancement, and apparently was fortunate to have it last for about a year and a half. Because of the extended detail feature I decided to buy another one - this time this 600 model. When I received it, I was frustrated to discover it had an international power plug that doesn't fit into my U.S. outlet; I then noticed that the box said it was a region 3 unit. Now here's where I hope I can help others: after much frustration, trips to electronics stores and attempts, I got my unit unlocked for region 1 and switched to play through HDMI. First, my unit did not come with an adapter, so I had to purchase one that plugs into the international prongs and then into a U.S. outlet. Second I had to unlock the region 3 by doing the following: turn unit on, open tray, type in 35147199 using the remote, turn off (tray will close), turn back on. O.K.
